Why cold cases…and the Zodiac killer

In the series It Was Him, Edward Edward’s grandson Wayne Wolf, along with “cold case expert” John Cameron, claim that Edwards may be responsible for dozens of murders, maybe even more than a hundred – including the Black Dahlia, JonBenét Ramsey, and, uh, Jimmy Hoffa. Also ludicrous is his claim that his grandfather is the Zodiac killer. Apparently, Edwards (who appears to have been a lying narcissist), had a fascination with the Zodiac and claimed he knew “how it really went down”. Please…

I’ve read quite a bit about the Zodiac, and this individual is particularly cold-blooded. Those four murders he committed were execution-style. What strikes me most about the Zodiac is that he revealed a lot of his personality in how he went about his crimes. There were the execution-style murders of the lovers’ lane couples, the donning of the Wing Walker military boots, the way he noted the date, time, place and method of execution on the car doors. But most interesting, of course, are the ciphers. Clearly, this guy thinks he is carrying out important work. This is not the kind of guy who would go on tv and promote himself as a reformed criminal. He wouldn’t publish a book. I think he went about his crimes the way he did because he enjoyed being obscure and unknown. He’s probably an introvert, not an extrovert like Edwards. We’re not sure if the Zodiac continued to kill after his canonical murders, but I’m betting that if he did kill again, he’d take a very similar approach – using symbols and ciphers and writing letters, writing on the car doors, wearing military-style boots.

I have just started watching The History Channel’s The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer, but I like their approach. It doesn’t jump to conclusions about the suspects. Far too much Zodiac material approaches the case from a specific angle. This one takes a very broad approach to the background of the case – visiting the scenes of the murders,, looking at the actual forensics, instead of indulging in sensation and specious “psychology”.

One indication that the Zodiac killer would be a fastidious, conservative type is this revelation about the ciphers, as shown in the screenshot above. A conventional mind would compose a simple cipher that reads left to right, and that is how the Zodiac ciphers have been approached in the past. But as we see above, there are sections of this undecoded cipher that contain L-shaped forms, in which the symbols are the same from top to bottom as they are from left to right. It’s always possible that these blocks of text were included to throw off the decoder, or they might, when decoded, provide yet another clue.

There is also a long section analyzing the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, in which the lead detective says that there is much evidence regarding this cold case that has not been released.

If this case is ever solved, it probably won’t be through eyewitnesses or boots or ciphers, but through DNA. According to this article, DNA technology has advanced enough in recent years that material that previously didn’t yield a DNA profile might be able to provide one now.

Edward Edwards, Part One

So, basically, with this site, I am currently in preparation mode. However, I will post several times a week to update readers with my latest findings.

I spent the past couple of days collecting links to cold case and missing persons sites and blogs. I made pdf’s of cases I found interesting. I intend to do research on each case and when I have enough material on a particular case, I will post it here. Eventually, I would like to add a database to this site.

Edward Edward’s mugshot, 1950’s.

While perusing the excellent Defrosting Cold Cases website, I learned about how Edward Edwards confessed to the 1980 murders of Kelly Drew and Tim Hack after being implicated by DNA. I had forgotten about that case, but was intrigued. Apparently, having been convicted of five murders, Edwards is suspected of more murders – including famous cases like the Atlanta child murders and even the Zodiac murders. I think those last two suspicions are silly as I feel the style of either of those serial killers doesn’t resemble that of Edwards. Furthermore, I believe that Edwards probably worked in familiar territory – probably in the Midwest.

For starters, I am going to watch some videos. There is a series (available through Amazon, YouTube and Google Play) called It Was Him: The Many Murders of Ed Edwards. In the meantime, here are two videos that you can watch for free on Youtube:

This is a video in which Megan Kelly of Today grills Ed Edwards’ grandson about his theories about his grandfather:

As a career criminal, Ed Edwards aspired to be famous and engaged in self-promotion. In 1972, he appeared on To Tell the Truth, where he claims to be reformed and respected in his community.

Edwards died in 2011.

John Andrews Cheek

I am currently disabled, due to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and sometimes crippling anxiety. I am currently in a recovery program to deal with my anxiety and trauma. As such, I try to find projects at home that will build and strengthen my skills in case I have recovered enough to work a full-time job. I have decided to start a site for logging cold and missing persons cases of note. The amount of cases out there is staggering, so I am currently collecting links to various cold case and missing persons sites.

My plan was initially to start with my hometown of Chicago and work outward. I will pretty much stick to that. I also intend to start with cases from the eighties and nineties. I have discovered a valuable resource for missing persons cases called namus.gov.

Here is the most interesting case I have found so far. His name is John Andrews Cheek, and he disappeared from Memphis, TN, on or around December 2, 1993.

More information about this case is available from The Charley Project website.

Welcome to my site.  I am currently searching police websites, city by city, and state by state.  I intend to add as many cold and missing person cases as I find to this web page.  It will be a couple of months before the site really takes shape.  Until then, bookmark this space!  And thank you for visiting.
